Mountain Wind Appaloosa Ranch
HOME OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST APPALOOSA
"If all you can do is what you have always done before, than all you can ever be is what you are right now"
Welcome to Mountain Wind Appaloosa Ranch, located in the Mid Willamette Valley of Oregon, a beautiful area where you can ride to the ocean or in the mountains. Mountain Wind is a small breeding / training operation, we are the home of the Working Pacific Northwest APPALOOSA ( see Goals and Controversies) .
WE believe that with a quality process we can create a quality product. Most of our horses are Foundation Pedigree Designated ( FPD) 90% or better ( see Goals and Controversies for information on FPD) . Our goal is to have horses breeding towards the Generation Advancement Program that have a large percentage of Pacific Northwest old line blood . We believe GAP is as close as ApHC will get to closing the books on the Appaloosa horse.
Before breeding, our mares will be shown to the best of their abilities ( we do trail, halter, team penning, parades, ECT ) we do not breed production style we believe its best to have 1 or 2 babies every year or two that are of high quality and by breeding to old line pedigreed PNW Appaloosa to Appaloosa horses we are hoping to help create a quality riding horse with old line Appaloosa blood that can do it all.
The controversy surrounding the Appaloosa horse from its conception overshadows its greatness even now. Even though our horses carry many National Champions in their pedigrees I believe our horses must make their own way and prove that they too can achieve greatness. Our horses have proven themselves in the show arena, cow arena and on the trail. Our goal was to produce horses that could do it all, and as a good breeding / training program we have three things. First and foremost a willingness to learn and change as you grow ( This means you have to put money, time and training into the horse). Second, horses that have the ability and intelligence to do anything ( good conformation and athletic ability). Third, the ability to maintain what you have accomplished (Breeding babies that out do both sire and dam,) .
Our herd is small and we have started by obtaining 3 outstanding mares who's pedigrees include Toby (can be traced back to the original Nez Perce and Palouse Appaloosas), Red Eagle, Riley's Purple Doll, Navajo Britches, Simcoe's Chinook, Bambi E, Sundance, Sanskrit, Chief Malheur, and many more. We do all our own ground training and start showing as yearlings doing halter and In Hand Trail. At 3 we do a lot of trail riding and show in classes that the horses seem to excel in and cow work. Starting in 2009 we hope to find a stallion for Shawnee and or Anna and if the Appaloosa horse gods are willing we will get a stud to start our breeding program with. Please take a walk through our horses pages and let us know what you think.
