Mountain Wind Appaloosa Ranch
HOME OF THE WORKING PACIFIC NORTHWEST APPALOOSA
OUT OF THE MISTS OF TIME WALKS A LEGEND
"What we must vigilantly guard against are those that refuse to accept the Appaloosa as a breed and what he stands for, and who continually exert pressure in the attempt to convert him into a Quarter Horse, an Arab, or even a Morgan, etc., with spots."
Robert Peckinpah, nine term ApHC President
Welcome to Mountain Wind Appaloosa Ranch, located in the Mid Willamette Valley of Oregon, a beautiful area where you can ride to the ocean or in the mountains. Mountain Wind is a small breeding / training operation, we are the home of the Working Pacific Northwest Appaloosa.
It has been our goal to have horses that are not just papered Appaloosas but Appaloosas that are shown to the best of their abilities Our goal is to have horses that have a large percentage of Pacific Northwest old blood . Do we breed every year NO, We believe that with a quality process we can create a quality product and by breeding to old line pedigreed PNW Appaloosa to Appaloosa horses we are hoping to help create a quality riding horse with old Appaloosa blood that can do it all.
The controversy surrounding the Appaloosa horse from its conception overshadows its greatness even now. Even though our horses carry many National Champions in their pedigrees I believe our horses must make their own way and prove that they too can achieve greatness. Our horses have proven themselves in the show arena, cow arena and on the trail. Our goal was to produce horses that could do it all, and as a good breeding / training program we have three things. First and foremost a willingness to learn and change as you grow ( This means you have to put money, time and training into the horse). Second, horses that have the ability and intelligence to do anything ( good conformation and athletic ability). Third, the ability to maintain what you have accomplished (Breeding babies that out do both sire and dam,) .
Our herd is small and their pedigrees include Toby (can be traced back to the original Nez Perce and Palouse Appaloosas), Red Eagle, Riley's Purple Doll, Navajo Britches, Simcoe's Chinook, Bambi E, Sundance, Sanskrit, Chief Malheur, and many more. We do all our own ground training and start showing as yearlings doing halter and In Hand Trail. At 3 we do a lot of trail riding and show in classes that the horses seem to excel in along with cow work.
